Fiona Lummis – Project | CONNECT

Fiona Lummis

Fiona Lummis is a British dancer with an internationally acclaimed career with the Nederlands Dans Theater.  Fiona received her formative dance training in the United Kingdom at the Elmhurst School of Dance and the Rambert Academy under the artistic direction of Christopher Bruce.

Fiona had expected she join Rambert but Christopher Bruce suggested that she audition for Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) as he felt it would be a good fit for her.  It helped that Fiona’s parents had seen NDT as Fiona’s father worked for the European Union and often travelled to the Netherlands and Belgium. Fiona flew to The Hague and auditioned for three days with NDT taking company class with guest teacher Hans Brenna from the Royal Danish Ballet and watching rehearsals.

At the end of the three day audition, Fiona was offered a contract with the junior company – NDT2 under the artistic direction of Arlette van Boven.  Fiona danced works from Jiří Kylián, Christopher Bruce, Judith Marcuse, Gerald Tibbs, Nils Christie, Jan Linkens, James Vincent, Hans van Manen and Glen Tetley.  Fiona also had the opportunity to work with the main company when she was in NDT2 as a member of the 2nd cast of Kylián’s new creation for the main company – Svadebka.

Two years after joining the junior company, Jiří Kylián asked Fiona to join the main company – NDT1. During her illustrious career with NDT, Fiona created no less than 15 roles in Jiří Kylián’s ballets, and in numerous works with Hans Van Manen, Nacho Duato, Ohad Naharin and Mats Ek amongst others. She danced featured roles in the repertoire of William Forsythe, Jerome Robbins, Lar Lubovitch and Glen Tetley.

In 1992, Fiona received the Gouden Theaterdans Prijs for her performances in William Forsythe’s ‘Steptext’ and in 2000 was awarded the “Oeuvre Prize” in recognition of her career in the Netherlands.

Fiona works closely with the Kylián and Van Manen foundations, teaching their repertoire in colleges, schools, and companies in the US and Europe.

We are very pleased that Fiona is able to join us at Project | CONNECT together with her husband, Glen Eddy.
